Scheduled vs. low cost airlines

Back to news

Are you planning a late summer or autumn holiday or do you just need airline tickets for your business travel? The selection of airlines is wide and should at least make some differences between scheduled and low cost airlines. What are their main advantages and disadvantages?

Low cost airlines

The most important advantage of low cost airlines is the price of the airline tickets. Thanks to quite high number of lowcosts there is a strong competition which makes airlines lower their prices even more. That's why you can often see airfare deals and special offers.

On the other hand there are many disadvantages. One of the most clear is the level of comfort which is not very high. In most cases you don't get any free refreshments onboard. Moreover, you have to pay for your baggage and there are many small „hidden“ fees.

Examples? Among the most famous low-cost carriers you can find e.g. Ryanair, Air Berlin, Condor, Spirit Airlines or AirAsia.

Scheduled airlines

The main disadvantage is the price. In comparison with the low cost airlines you have to pay much more in general. However, the level of comfort is much higher and you don't have to pay all the hidden fees. Another advantage is that many scheduled airlines operate worldwide or at least they offer long haul destinations. It is not rare that they are codeshared with other airlines. This enables passengers to simply book flights to whatever destination they want.

Examples? Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Lufthansa, Iberia, Cathay Pacific Air or Air China.
