Vijayawada airport to get a facelift and expansion soon
The commercial capital of Andhra Pradesh, Vijayawada (VGA), would soon expand to enable landing of bigger aircraft like the Boeing 737 and Airbus, which currently is handling only ATR-make aircraft with daily flights operated to Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru. The Chief Minister has given a nod for land acquisition for expansion of the Gannavaram Airport at Vijayawada, which was decided four years ago.
The AAI (Airports Authority of India) is responsible for development of the Airport and has a MoU with the state government as is the case with most of the new Airports in the country. The state government of Andhra Pradesh was lagging in the land acquisition which is the cause of the delay. However, the political and financial conditions now look favourable as the state have sanctioned Rs.76 crore for acquiring another 361 acres for the runway expansion.
The Vijayawada airport expansion works, including construction of a modern passenger terminal building and hangars, would bring more flight operators to the city which currently lands only Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways. Spicejet is scheduled to start flights to this commercial city from July. The city has a lot of Non Resident Indians contributing to flight traffic from Delhi and Mumbai every week.
Other major city in the state, Tirupati which is sanctioned an international airport at Renigunta, also would be taken up the as a priority as the Chief Minister also gave his nod for allocation of Rs 133 crore additional funds for its land acquisition too.
