Trial Metro rail check-in begins in Delhi from May 1, 2011
Now air passengers in Delhi can check-in at Airport metro line stations itself as their start their way to the Airport. Presently this is being implemented as a trial run for a month for domestic passengers of Air India, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines, which would later be extend to other Airlines based on the efficiency and need. The facility is currently for domestic passengers only and International passengers would be able to avail the facility a month later. However, the passengers using this should check-in 2.5 hours priors to the flight departure.
Baggage check-in for Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) is allowed at the New Delhi Railway Station and Shivaji Stadium station while passengers without baggage would be allowed to check-in at the Dhaula Kuan station as well. According to the initial operation plan, check-in would start 12 hours before the estimated time of departure (ETD).
The boarding passes of passengers boarding at one of these stations would be verified through a Passenger reconciliation system at the Airport and confirm the traveller. The checked-in baggage will reach the Airport atleast 1 hr. before the departure time and is boarded to the flight. This eases the baggage check-in queues at the counters which are a concern today at crowded airports like IGI, Delhi.
However issues of break-down of trains have been addressed by the Ministry and the passengers are assured in-time reach. The other issue of passenger not reporting after checking-in has yet to find a solution, as it cannot be ensured unless he boards the Metro before time scheduled.
Delhi Airport Metro Express Pvt. Ltd. has built the Express rail link connecting Indira Gandhi International Airport to New Delhi station and Shivaji stadium and this was inaugurated on the eve of Commonwealth games in New Delhi last year. This would be used for the purpose.
