Back to news

Pune has been leading the Air passenger traffic growth in the country clocking 25% growth in the last year, and is on a smooth run to reach its targeted 3 million mark for annual passenger traffic by March 2012.

The number of passengers flying in and out of the Pune's Lohegaon airport rose by 24.64% in the last year. The Airport handled 28.14 lakh passengers during 2010–11 financial year, against 22.57 lakh in 2009–10. According to the Airports Authority of India, Pune now leads the Indian cities interms of Air traffic growth rate.

Pune now connects 11 destinations on the domestic circuit and another 2 destinations on the international circuit namely Dubai and Frankfurt with 8 airlines operating from the city.

Pune is one of the optimum space users, considering that there are no new destinations added to the routes, but new flights added to Bangalore route and Delhi route. However Pune is on the radar for implementing new destinations and adding flights very soon considering 8 new flight proposals are pending with the Airport.

More than 11,000 square meters of space has been added at the airport with the construction of two new international arrivals and departures terminals on either side of the main terminal building in 2009–10. This has resulted in peak-time passenger handling capacity going up from 450 to 900 passengers. Even the cargo division has clocked 54% rise in the last financial year at this airport.
